A Patient’s Story

A Patient’s Story

My family and I moved to Bangor during the summer of 2015. I was in between jobs at the time, so our family didn’t have health insurance. That year, our youngest son, Maxwell, who was 2.5 years old, became quite ill. He had a severe cough and developed chest retractions. My husband and I were worried about the fact that we did not have health insurance coverage given Maxwell’s condition. We did some online research and learned that at Penobscot Pediatrics, you could use the walk-in care even if your child wasn’t an established patient, and you could pay cash for your visit. We took Maxwell straight to Penobscot Pediatrics.

When we entered Penobscot Pediatrics, we were quickly escorted to an exam room. The medical assistant and nurse practitioner promptly assessed Maxwell. His oxygen saturation was 80% upon arrival. They administered nebulizer treatments and sat with us in the room and explained everything as they intervened. After several nebulizer treatments, they were able to get his oxygen up to 97%. Then, the provider helped us locate a medical supply store that would sell us a reasonably priced home nebulizer. They explained what we needed to do to treat Maxwell at home. They worked with us for over two hours that day, and the entire time we could tell that the team genuinely cared about our son and us, even though they had never met us before. We never felt judged by the fact that we did not have health insurance.

Our oldest son, Cameron, was born in Boston, and we’ve received pediatric services at institutions that are known to be the best in the world. However, my husband and I had never experienced genuine compassion and quality health care for either of our children until we stepped foot into PCHC Pediatrics. We established pediatric services for both of our children the day we brought Maxwell into the walk-in care, and we have never regretted the decision. The walk-in care has saved us so many weekends with numerous ear infections, fractured bones, and ongoing respiratory challenges. All of the walk-in and primary care pediatric providers even know our children by name. Penobscot Pediatrics is home to us.
